LEED Certified Virginia Theological Seminary Faculty Houses
Alexandria, Va.
To reduce the environmental impact on-site, tree protection and erosion and sediment controls were installed before any site work began. During construction, we diverted 75% of the construction waste from landfills. Permeable pavers that reduce water runoff were installed in lieu of concrete or asphalt. A native wildflower mix was planted instead of high-maintenance and water-intensive turf grass. Many existing trees were preserved to provide shade to the houses. FSC wood was used whenever possible, and all flooring was purchased from a local vendor whose material is locally harvested.
We also contributed to improved air quality in the homes by using zero-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints; low-VOC stains, sealants and adhesives; and MERV13 air filters. Hagerstown Cabinets supplied all cabinetry; Hagerstown is a member of the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program dedicated to zero formaldehyde emissions. In addition, all ducts and vents were covered during construction to prevent the introduction of contaminants into the HVAC system, and a pre-occupancy air flush was performed to remove any trace of dust or odors.
