Renovating Late 18th Century Doors in Old Town

May 18, 2017 | Master Carpentry

We get a first hand glimpse at a past way of life while renovating historic Old Town Alexandria homes. At this client’s home in Old Town, we custom made operable door panels the same way they were constructed in the late 18th century. The window, its frames, glass and side panels are original to the house, but we relocated them and then made the doors from scratch. The doors are composed of mahogany and redwood with a heart pine sill.

The window is raised to enter or exit the home.

There are several doors like this within two blocks. Harry grew up in a house at 213 S Pitt St that had the same type of door!
